Edgar Cayce on the Soul’s Purpose
For life is, and experience is, what each soul makes of it.
Fulfilling the soul’s purpose is a greater service,
a greater joy than may be had by him who may have built a city or have conquered a nation.”
–Edgar Cayce
There are several repeated themes in the Cayce material about the mission of the soul. These five universal characteristics are relevant to your own search to find a unique purpose for life. It may well be that everyone’s mission will not fit all five of these qualities, but the implication in the Cayce material is that some of these characteristics will fit each of us.
AN EXPANSION OF CONSCIOUSNESS – A SENSE OF WONDER.
As you live your mission in life, a constant feeling of expanding awareness is created.
Living your soul’s purpose will make you more conscious, and with that expanded consciousness comes a sense of wonder and awe.
This feeling of life is always unfolding, expanding and opening up before you.
SERVICE TO OTHERS – MAKING A CREATIVE CONTRIBUTION IN THE WORLD.
The ideal of service is central to the philosophy and counsel found in the Cayce readings. These teachings stress that service comes from the real individuality of the soul. You were born with the intentions and the talents to create and to give in a manner that is perhaps better than any other soul. In some special way you are meant to serve others with a level of effectiveness unmatched by anyone else.
CLOSENESS TO GOD.
Simply put, the living of one’s mission in life brings a deeper understanding of one’s relationship to the Divine. As you truly begin to live what you were born to do, the accompanying experience is one of directly feeling God’s presence. For many people, this comes as a deep sense of being at peace – with themselves and with all of life. For others, it comes as a sense of love; for the first time in their lives they may be able to say that they really love other people; and, just as importantly, that they really love themselves.
A VIEW OF PURPOSEFULNESS IN ALL OF LIFE.
Living your soul’s purpose sensitizes you to purposefulness all around you.
You begin to recognize and intuit purpose in others’ lives.
Living your own soul’s purpose connects you with a level of spiritual and soul forces
where you see how all of life is working with a purposeful plan.
JOY IN LIFE.
Living your soul’s purpose will bring you joy. Cayce said that we need not expect of ourselves some “great deed” in life in order to feel that life had meaning; but rather, fulfilling the purpose for which we were born would bring a sense of joy far exceeding the self-satisfaction that might come from a so-called “great deed.”
Understanding these five characteristics can be a very valuable tool in discovering your soul’s mission.
They are the key indicators that you are on the right track. When any or all of them begin to happen in your life in a consistent way, you can be sure you are in tune with aspects of your soul’s purpose.
